Sunday’s defeat in the Ike Southward Memorial game against Workington Town has left Whitehaven with two injury concerns.
Centre Chris Taylor and Australian full-back Josh Martin had to leave the field during the game which Town won 18-14 with a last gasp try.
Taylor has a bicep injury while Martin suffered a partial dislocation of the shoulder.
Coach Jonty Gorley said: “Hopefully they aren’t too bad but they will be assessed during the week ahead of the warm-up game at Swinton on Sunday.
“I will be taking 19 or 20 players there and certainly the lads who didn’t play against Town will get a run-out.”
Gorley had stuck to his guns and only went with four substitutes for the Town game while Chris Thorman decided to go into it with eight on the bench, all of whom were used.
“Maybe it came back to bite me on the backside but I always feel it is important to go with 17 in the Ike Trophy game.
“It did mean we got plenty of minutes into the players as I wanted them tested, but injuries meant we had to reorganise with lads in different positions.
“First half I was very pleased because we defended really well, got through our sets and had a good kick and chase game.
“The trouble was we only scored the one try. A couple of wrong options by the ball carrier on the last tackle probably cost us tries.
“Second half we coughed up the ball too much and didn’t get into as many good attacking positions.
“It’s always disappointing to lose, especially a derby game, but we go again at Swinton on Sunday and it’s all about being ready for the opening game in the Championship in a fortnight.
“I liked the look of our two new Australians. Alex Bishop is going to be a good half-back for us and Josh Martin had tidied up well at full-back before he was injured.”
Gorley should get a look at his other two overseas recruits at Swinton – centre Will Evans and full-back Geronimo Doyle.
