Investigation work will start next week as part of Kendal’s Flood Risk Management Scheme.
Contractors will be working at Gooseholme Park to investigate the extent of foundations of a former river wall and the make up of materials in the area, which is a former river channel.
The groundwork has to be done before construction of any flood defences can begin.
Fencing and ground protection matting will be set up on Monday and Tuesday and ground investigations are scheduled from Wednesday to Wednesday February 9.
When complete, the Kendal Flood Risk Management project will reduce the risk of flooding to 1,400 homes and 1,100 business and is an important part of how the Environment Agency is working locally to help communities adapt to the increasing flood risk caused by the climate emergency.
Alex Cowin, project manager for this element of the Kendal Flood Risk Management Scheme, said: “During February, ground investigation works will take place at Gooseholme Park in Kendal to inform the design of the new flood defences in this part of the town.
“Access into the park will not be restricted beyond the closures already in place by Story Contracting, as part of their construction of the new Gooseholme Footbridge on behalf of Cumbria County Council.
“The Environment Agency is working closely with both Cumbria County Council and Story to collaboratively deliver the flood defence works.”
