Cleator Moor Celtic’s 2-1 home victory over Garstang was a double boost for the West Cumbrians.
Most importantly it was another step towards North West Counties League survival but also lifted morale for Wednesday’s County Cup quarter final against Carlisle United.
Manager Martin Mahone, who is in communication with his successor for next season Brian Dawson, said he was very happy with the performance.
“We were only under a bit of pressure late on when they scored from the penalty spot but we saw it through and that helped us move a little nearer safety.
“That’s the aim to survive at this level before handing over to Brian and if we play like that in what’s left of the season I’m sure we will be fine,” he said.

Celtic had got off to a flying start as top scorer Jay Wetherill netted on eight minutes and then Callum Birdsall followed-up three minutes later with the second.
“We had a couple more chances but were generally comfortable. The second half was more even and they had opportunities before they got a bit of a lifeline with the late penalty in the 90th minute.
“Fortunately the referee only added-on three minutes and we were able to see it through,” said Mahone.
Joseph Noble notched the penalty, which Celtic felt was harsh, but Garstang weren’t able to threaten again in the time that remained.
“The win has given everyone a boost and we are all really looking forward to Wednesday’s Cup-tie at home to Carlisle United who are the holders.
“We have a couple of long-term injuries but we should be strong and competitive and we are expecting a cracking Cup-tie,” said Mahone.
