Workington Town’s home game with Halifax Panthers was called off this morning after the initial pitch inspection had given the go ahead.
The Halifax team and officials, along with supporters were able to set off for the Betfred Championship game at Derwent Park.
However, Town did add in their initial communication that the situation would be constantly reviewed because of the weather warnings that had been put in place.
A yellow weather warning over wind and rain was in place and as the morning developed the Ground Safety Officer deemed it wise to call it off.
There is no alternative date set for a restaging of the game but it might be fitted in when both teams make their exit from the Challenge Cup.
A club spokesman said: “It’s one of those unfortunate situation where you’re damned if you do, and damned if you don’t. We did say from the start when the pitch was declared playable that we would keep the situation constantly under review because of the safety aspect.”
Barrow’s game at Bradford had been called off on Friday night but Whitehaven did get in their game at Newcastle on Saturday where they lost 40-24.
