Carlisle MP John Stevenson has written to the city council after concerns have been raised that the Easter Fair will not go ahead this year.
Mr Stevenson said talks were happening between the authority and the Scottish section of the Showmen’s Guild of Great Britain over the rental costs.
The annual funfair – which has not been in the city since before the coronavirus pandemic – used to take place on Devonshire Street car park.
But the Showmen’s Guild has raised concerns that this year’s event may not go ahead due to Carlisle City Council’s decision to increase the rent for the event.
In a letter to Jason Gooding, the city council’s chief executive, Mr Stevenson said: “The Easter Fair is a well-loved event in Carlisle and there has been a great deal of disappointment that the event has not taken place since 2019 due to the pandemic and COVID restrictions.
“I am also aware of the impact this has had on the showmen and their families over two very difficult years. I understand that negotiations are still underway between yourselves and the Showmen’s Guild, and I would like to encourage you to rethink this rent increase and do all you can to ensure this event take place.”
Leader of Carlisle City Council, John Mallinson said: “I am aware that negotiations have been ongoing with the Showmen’s Guild and I have given clear instruction to conclude them and to limit increases to inflation.
“This is very fair proposal and we hope that it is accepted. Carlisle has a successful track record of hosting visiting funfairs and we look forward to welcoming the Easter Fair to Carlisle.”
