Six vets partnered with a Cumbrian charity to offer discounted neutering services to cat owners to celebrate World Spay Day this week.
The team at Oak Tree Animals’ Charity teamed up with Capontree, Coomara, Craig Robinson, Eden, Paragon and The Green Vets, who worked throug the day to neuter 25 much loved pets on Tuesday.
Julie Charlton, community team leader at Oak Tree, said: “At Oak Tree we unfortunately see a great many unwanted kittens, from both town and rural environments, that need rehoming.
“It is always sad when we pick up unneutered, often injured, male cats that may have started life as a much-loved kitten but are now strays competing and fighting with other cats for food and mates.
“Owners often don’t realise that their kittens can get pregnant as young as 16 weeks. World Spay Day provides us with the opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of neutering and work with our partner vets to make a real improvement to the lives of cats.”
Charlotte Deniston, vet at Coomara Veterinary Practice, Carlisle, said: “We were delighted to be involved in supporting Oak Tree Animals’ Charity for World Spay Day again this year.
“Spaying female cats has a number of benefits, not only preventing the welfare issues surrounding unwanted kittens, but also reducing the risk of womb infections and cancers in the neutered cat. We had the pleasure of looking after five beautiful cats from our community, whose owners were able to take advantage of this fantastic scheme.”
