Carlisle MP John Stevenson and Workington MP Mark Jenkinson have joined a Parliamentary committee to debate the law which surrounds the proposed shake-up of local government in Cumbria.
The existing district councils and Cumbria County Council will be abolished, to be replaced by Westmorland and Furness Council and Cumberland Council.
Mr Stevenson and Mr Jenkinson are among 17 members appointed to the First Delegated Legislation Committee.
The committee provides a forum for discussing the merits of proposed laws and at a meeting yesterday, the committee unanimously agreed that the next stage in the creation of a single tier of local government for Cumbria should go ahead.
Mr Stevenson said: “I am delighted to have been asked to join the committee. I am very clear that local Government reform for Cumbria is the a positive step forward.
“The current system clearly does not work for our county, and the creation of two unitary authorities will undoubtedly improve the performance of local government, enabling strong leadership and the ability to make decisions for ourselves.”
