A popular café where people pay what they can afford is reopening in Kendal on Saturday.
Good food from local supermarkets, shops and bakeries, which would otherwise go to waste, is turned into nourishing meals for everyone to enjoy.
It is served up between noon and 2pm at the People’s Café in the South Lakes Foyer – between Kendal’s bus station and the JobCentre.
Kendal’s People Café, is a waste to wellbeing volunteer-led, social project at the heart of Kendal’s Food Community.
Organised by a charity, South Lakes Action on Climate Change, it runs alongside two other food share initiatives. A lunch club for older people and a community pantry.
When the café was forced to close because of the pandemic, food was still getting to those in need. Weekly pantry food shares were set up and lunches were delivered, twice a month, to older people through the Kendal Integrated Community Care team.
As the café reopens, Jane Hodgson says: “We’ll be getting creative with all sorts delicious ingredients that would otherwise be wasted. Our friendly volunteers will be serving up hearty soups, tasty wraps or sandwiches followed by crumbles, sponge puddings or cake.”
“It’s so great to be back. We’re really looking forward to seeing customers old and new.”
The cafe will be open this Saturday, March 5, Saturday April 2 and Saturday May 7.
