Conservatives from Workington, Carlisle and Copeland have pledged to improve roads and frontline services plus keep council tax low as they launch their campaign for Cumbria’s new council set-up.
Elections for the new Cumberland Council and Westmorland and Furness Council will take place on May 5 this year.
They will come into being in 2023 to replace the existing district councils and county council in the biggest shake-up of local government in the county in decades.
The Tories officially launched their campaign for Cumberland Council – which will replace Allerdale, Copeland and Carlisle authorities – in Maryport last Saturday and said they have begun campaigning.
The launch was attended by Carlisle MP John Stevenson, Copeland MP Trudy Harrison and Workington MP Mark Jenkinson.
Mr Jenkinson said: “We require a nuanced approach to local governance across West Cumbria, our roads, vital services including libraries and public transport and high streets must be a priority.
“I will be joining campaign days across Workington, Copeland and Carlisle in the upcoming months, and look forward to hearing from residents on the doorstep.”
Mrs Harrison added: “The Cumberland authority provides immense opportunities for business, innovation and talent across Cumberland.”
Mr Stevenson said: “Our frontline services are vital to this area, I want to ensure that our schools, hospitals and businesses get the necessary support – something I know the Conservatives are committed to.”
