Workington Reds had a hugely successful friendly game at Lancaster City to fill a vacant Saturday.
They won 4-1 against the Unibond Premier side who had only a senior centre-back missing from their strongest line-up.
Manager Chris Willcock said: “Everything was a plus on the day. We played well, scored four goals and could have had more, and came through it with no injuries.
“It was just what we needed after last week’s defeat as Lancaster provided good, competitive opposition.
“We had decided to go for a match after two mid-week training sessions instead of a third, and when Lancaster offered to host us it was a no brainer.”
Two goals from Dav Symington, including a trademark free-kick, gave Reds a half-time lead and then Scott Allison made it 3-0. Nathan Reid pulled one back for the hosts before Connor Gaul grabbed Reds’ fourth.
Sam Smith wasn’t included as he was rested after picking up a niggling injury but he will be fine for Tuesday’s resumption of the League campaign at Bootle.
After the game at Lancaster, assistant manager Steven Rudd was going to take in the Kendal game against Warrington Rylands, while Willcock was hot-footing it to watch Prescot Cables v Colne.
“It’s a good opportunity to look at teams we still have to play before the end of the season,” said Willcock.
Rylands, Colne and Kendal all have to visit Borough Park while Workington still have to travel to Prescot.
