Rosie Watson rescues sheep

Three Cumbrian climbers pulled off a daring cliffside rescue of a sheep that became stuck on a Lake District ledge.

On Tuesday, Rosie Watson, Chris Moore and Jenny Mather were out climbing Raven Crag in the Langdales when on their first ascent they came across a stranded ewe.

The high Herdwick had become stuck on a ledge and couldn’t make its way back.

Knowing what to do, Rosie and Chris climbed up and set up an anchor to attach themselves to, with Jenny waiting below.

Chris then herded the woolly wanderer towards Rosie who managed to get a hold of it.

Not content with being saved the sheep then tried to jump off so Rosie made sure to keep a tight grip.

Putting a sling underneath the sheep for safety, Chris lowered Rosie down while holding the ewe. Once on the group and unclipped, the sheep didn’t stop to say thanks and bolted off to safety.

Rosie said: “I was pleased to have got it down because it seemed to be very stressed and at this time of year they could be in lamb.”

Chris added: “It’s not the first time I’ve had to do this, sheep aren’t the brightest animals and seem to find their way onto these ledges but are unable to get back off them.”
