A man accused of intentionally causing grievous bodily harm following a mid-morning incident in central Carlisle is to stand trial.
Detective launched a public appeal for witnesses to come forward after officers were called to Court Square, off Botchergate, at 10.45am on February 21. A man aged in his 20s was reported to have suffered an injury to his mouth area which required stitches when he was treated in hospital.
As part of the investigation into the incident, 25-year-old Ricky Lee Wayne Murphy faces two charges.
One alleges that he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Tyler Nunn with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
A second charge alleges that Murphy illegally had an article with a blade or point — a knife — in a public place, Court Square, without good reason or lawful authority.
Murphy appeared at Carlisle Crown Court earlier today, remotely over a video link.
During a brief hearing in front of Recorder Philip Grundy, Murphy pleaded not guilty when the two charges were read to him by a clerk.
Lawyers agreed a timetable for the progression of the case. Murphy, of Raven Nook, off Greystone Road, Carlisle, will next stand trial in front of a jury.
This hearing is due to start in the week of July 18 and, it is estimated, will last three to four days. There are likely to be four witnesses in the case.
In the meantime, Murphy was remanded in custody by Recorder Grundy.
