Improvements are continuing in Copeland thanks to a £159,000 scheme.

The government-funded Welcome Back scheme has already delivered new outdoor seating in many towns and villages, promotional videos of the area, litter picking kits for communities and colourful tourist maps.

Now:

  • The gazebo in Whitehaven’s Market Place has been fully repainted
  • Work has begun on painting lamp posts in Millom town centre
  • Sixteen new benches will be delivered around the borough, either replacing old ones or creating new seating areas
  • The bandstand in Castle Park, Whitehaven, is being repainted

In addition, work on an impressive mural on the wall of the DeMounters building in Egremont is now underway. The painting will depict local scenes and traditions, and the small piece of land alongside it will be improved.

Copeland Mayor, Mike Starkie, said: “These improvements are happening across the borough. They are making a difference to the way our places look and feel, both for those of us who live here and for those who visit.

“Small changes are a real factor in us all being able to feel a ‘Pride of Place’ for Copeland.”

The Welcome Back fund aims to boost the look and feel of high streets and seaside towns. The funding helps councils prepare for the safe return of shoppers and tourists.
