Organisers of the Children’s Cancer Run Carlisle have announced entries are now open, urging runners to apply early as they are expecting a bumper starting line-up for its second year.
Today Children’s Cancer North held an official launch event to raise awareness for the Children’s Cancer Run which takes place on June 26 at Bitts Park. Among those giving the event their backing are the Brough and Presch families, and children and staff from Inglewood Junior School, who all attended the launch, bringing a buzz of excitement.
The Brough family, from near Carlisle, have supported the Children’s Cancer Run since daughter Holly was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL) in 2014, aged just two years old and helped to bring this event to the North West for the first time last year.
Now aged nine, Holly is encouraging everyone she knows to sign up. She said: “It is great fun, and everyone can do it! You can run, walk, skip, or dance your way round.”
The Presch family, from Great Corby, also attended the launch. Mia Presch was just three years old when she was diagnosed with Wilms Tumour, a rare children’s kidney cancer, in December 2016.
She underwent 16 rounds of chemotherapy and had a kidney removed during her treatment at the Great North Children’s Hospital in Newcastle. Thankfully Mia, who lives in Great Corby with sister Darcey, six, mum Krista and dad Gareth, has been in remission for four and a half years now. Mia, now aged 10, and sister Darcey will be taking part in the Children’s Cancer Run Carlisle and are inviting others to sign up to join them.
The charity also organises the Children’s Cancer Run, Newcastle which takes place on May 15. To date, the charity has raised over £40 million towards research into children’s cancers and supporting children and their families affected by cancer at the Great North Children’s Hospital.
Last year 101 children in the North East and Cumbria were diagnosed with cancer. These events raise vital funds to support these children and their families when they are going through the toughest of times.
Chris Peacock, Chairman of Children’s Cancer North, and founder of the Children’s Cancer Run, said: “We are excited to bring the Cancer Run back to Carlisle, offering a great day out for all the family whilst raising money for a vital cause. We hope over 1,000 children and adults will take part in the run, raising a further £30,000 to help make life better for children with cancer locally.
“We already have children from 10 schools registered to take part and hope to attract runners of all abilities who can complete the course in their own time. We especially want runners to encourage their friends and families to line the route and cheer everyone round. There will be lots of activities for everyone on the day in the Event Village, including a CFM Roadshow, fairground rides, children’s activities, and food stalls, making the event a great family day out.”
Entries are open now with a choice of one, three or five-mile cross-country routes, catering for all ages and abilities. All runners will receive a limited edition medal and a snack box to celebrate their achievement. All children aged 16 years and under will also receive a limited edition Children’s Cancer Run t-shirt.
The Children’s Cancer Run Carlisle takes place on June 26, commencing at 9.30am. Early bird tickets are currently available and cost £14 for adults, £7 for children and £40 for families. Entries can be made online by visiting:
