A charity that has awarded nearly £40 million in grants locally over almost 60 years is looking for three new trustees to join its board.
The Francis C Scott Charitable Trust (FCSCT) works with groups that enable young people experiencing challenging circumstances, to thrive.
Each year the FCSCT distributes about £1 million to not-for-profit organisations working with children and young people in Cumbria and North Lancashire.
Established in 1963 by Peter Scott CBE, with shares from the Scott family business, Provincial Insurance, the FCSCT continues to reflect the philanthropic interests of Francis C Scott in his lifetime, specifically the personal development of young people.
Now the trust is looking for three volunteer trustees. They would like to hear from people with enthusiasm and commitment, who want to be part of a team that makes a significant difference to the quality of life for local young people.
Working collectively, the trustees ensure there is a clear strategy, that the trust’s work and goals are in line with the vision of Francis Scott, and that the financial legacy continues to work with groups who make a life-changing impact.
Director Helen Carter said: “There are so many good reasons to apply. As a local funder, we have a key role to play in providing reliable, trusted funding sources – now more than ever. To do that we need strong leadership and governance.
“You’ll be joining at an exciting time, as we roll out our social investment offer and enter a sixth decade of giving. And be part of an exceptional team that believes in the importance of equity of access to opportunities for all young people. Plus, you’ll be putting your skills to good use, learning new ones, and meeting new people.”
Helen Carter says communities and charities are navigating very difficult times, and their response has been phenomenal throughout the pandemic.
As a result of this Helen said: “We’ve seen an upturn in funding applications as organisations return to their usual practices and experience an increase in demand for their services. Particularly from charities and groups supporting young people, who’ve been disproportionately affected by the pandemic.
“A lifeline for many were short terms funds, many of which have now ended. We remain in a position to distribute funds at pre-pandemic levels and we’re here for the long term. We can also make social loans, to help organisations plan ahead, and be more sustainably viable.
“We are fortunate to have a highly skilled and engaged board who are keen to welcome new trustees who share our charitable objectives, priorities and core values. People who are naturally inclusive, with an open mindset that values and accommodates different perspectives, and who demonstrate high levels of integrity.
“We particularly welcome applications from people who know the communities we serve, and who may not typically apply for a role on a board, or may not have done so before. New trustees will receive a comprehensive induction and support as they learn about the trust and the role. Due to the nature of our work, we are also keen to hear from individuals with financial expertise and those with an understanding of investments.”
A trustee recruitment pack can be downloaded from the trustee section of the ‘about’ page.
