Penrith continue to give themselves a fighting chance of avoiding the drop into the Northern League’s Division Two.
A 2-0 win at Sunderland Ryhope CW last night pulled them up to fourth bottom, although the two teams immediately below them have each a game in hand.
It was only the second time that Penrith have put together back-to-back wins and the Ryhope victory follows Saturday’s success against League leaders Consett.
Chairman Billy Williams said: “We have to go on this time and make it three in a row when we go to West Auckland on Saturday.
“It’s not in our own hands unfortunately and we also have to keep an eye on what Northallerton and Bishop Auckland are doing.
“Northallerton play tonight at home to Whickham.
“But as far as we are concerned all the players that pulled on a Penrith shirt last night deserve a pat on the back.
“It’s a funny game football. From a side who didn’t look as though they knew where the next win was coming, they have outplayed two of the better sides in the League for deserved victories.
“I’ve said for some time, that despite the results we had to keep the faith, and that has certainly been rewarded with the last two victories.”
Seventeen-year-old pint sized striker Alfie Brunskill is rapidly emerging as one of Penrith’s saviours as he was on target again to give his side the lead at Ryhope on 24 minutes.
Another clever finish from Jamie Armstrong on 68 minutes doubled the Penrith lead and they were able to see it through without any serious alarms..
