Mike Dawson, one of the best known players in county snooker circles, has died.
A veteran of the game for most of his life he was accomplished at both billiards and snooker.
Kevin Basnett, a leading current player in the county, said: “It is with great sadness to the Cumbria snooker community to hear of the very recent passing of Mike Dawson.
“Mike was a true legend of the game and there isn’t a person in Cumbria who is involved with snooker who won’t have a story to tell about Mike and how his unrivalled passion for snooker always shone through.
“Mike played at the very highest level as an amateur and won everything there is to play for in Cumbria including three county championship titles.
“A student of the game Mike was still pitting his wits against Cumbria’s elite as recent as 2020, nearly 70 years after he started playing.
“Mike will be sadly missed and our thoughts go out to Mike’s family at this difficult time.”
A JustGiving page has been set up to buy a wreath on behalf of the snooker community and any additional money raised will be donated to a charity of Mike’s family’s choice.
