A man who beat an A&E nurse and tried to throw a blood-soaked towel towards her has avoided jail.
Ashley David Clark appeared before magistrates in Barrow on April 4 and admitted assaulting a female A&E nurse in Barrow on December 27 last year.
Clark, 27, of Cloisters Avenue in Barrow, was jailed for 10 weeks suspended for 12 months. The court heard that the seriousness of the offence was heightened by Clark’s intention to throw a blood-soaked towel, an act likened to spitting.
He also committed the offence while serving a community order.
Magistrates also pointed to his recent previous convictions when sentencing Clark.
The offence was also committed while he was drunk and in the presence of the public and children.
Clark’s “genuine remorse” and “cooperation” following his arrest were also noted by the court.
The prison sentence was suspended as the court believed there was a prospect of rehabilitation in the community in relation to his alcohol use.
Clark must not consume any alcohol for 90 days and must attend appointments with a responsible officer or engage in activities set out by such an officer.
He was ordered to pay £200 compensation.
