Wath Brow Hornets returned to winning form with a 34-10 home win over York Acorn.
The West Cumbrians probably expected to win handier against the NCL Premier Division’s bottom side who showed a lot of spirit in defeat.
But Hornets will be pleased to record a win again after last week’s disappointing defeat at Siddal.
A controversial sending off early in the game was a crucial factor and Wath Brow have appealed against Cole Walker-Taylor’s red card.
They had raced into a 14-0 lead with tries from Fran King, Morgan McCourt and Walker-Taylor, plus one conversion by Sam Curwen.
Before the break, however, Adam Lee scored a try for the York visitors which was converted by Antony Chilton.
That soon became 14-10 after the resumption when Lee went in for his second try.
Wath Brow responded positively, however, and took charge to finish nicely clear.
McCourt went on to score three more tries and Ellison Holgate also crossed with Curwen converting two of them.
Egremont Rangers
Egremont Rangers suffered a late 14-12 defeat at Thornhill Trojans, who were putting together back-to-back wins after four defeats to start the season.
The disappointment for Egremont, apart from the result, was that they led 12-4 at half-time yet couldn’t find another point in the second half.
Despite having Tom Horner sin-binned, they had established their interval lead with tries from Matt Hutchins and Pat Wells, both converted by Kristian Tyson.
However, the Trojans scored a second try two minutes into the second half and won it 13 minutes from the end with a converted try.
Kells
Kells lead a posse of five clubs on eight points now joint second in Division One after a fine 50-28 win at Ince Rose Bridge.
All five are just a point behind leaders Oulton Raiders, whose only defeat was at Kells.
Peter Smith’s men made a great start and had gone 18-0 in front within half an hour as Ross Gainford, Kieran Fleming and James Ennis scored tries, all converted by Gainford.
Jordan Burns scored a fourth Kells try before half-time when they led 24-6.
Although Rose Bridge cut the deficit to eight points, Kells stormed away with further tries by Ennis, Karl Gardner, Clarke Chambers and Jake Parker.
The hosts scored another two tries but they weren’t going to get near the Cumbrians who scored the last try of the game through Chambers. Gainford finished with seven goals.
Barrow Island
Barrow Island’s charge up Division Two was halted at Woolston Rovers where they lost 42-28.
At half-time, though, there was every indication it was going to be a tight finish for the home side led 12-10.
Indeed with just 11 minutes left it was still anyone’s game with Woolston ahead 30-28. But two late converted tries carried the hosts clear.
Adam Ford, Aidan Wright, Dan Wright, Jake Stockdale and Sam Jones scored tries for the Islanders, four of which were converted by Adam Jackson.
Hensingham
In Division Three Hensingham just failed in a late fightback at home to Shaw Cross Sharks and lost 20-16.
They had trailed 20-8 when, just after the hour, the Sharks had Brad Baines sin-binned for foul play.
The home side responded strongly and scored tries through Scott Egan and Kurt Maudling but unfortunately neither were converted.
Hensingham had led 8-4 at half-time through two tries by Callum Morgan, but they also had to play with 12 men when he was sin-binned for foul play.
The Sharks had come through to lead well entering the last quarter, and Hensingham’s late efforts proved in vain.
Millom
The basement battle between the bottom two sides provided Millom with their second win as they beat Eastmoor Dragons 24-20.
A try in the closing minutes from Niall Harris clinched the win after it looked to be heading for a draw.
In a topsy-turvy game, Millom led 12-0 and trailed 18-12 before their dramatic victory with tries by Harris (2), Jonty Peters, Jordan Moyes and Jonathan Hodgson. Peters landed two goals.
