A man and a woman, both in their 70s, have been taken to hospital following a collision on the A596 near Wigton.

Emergency services were called at around 1.25pm today, April 12, after reports of the collision between a Toyota and a tractor.

The Great North Air Ambulance, police, ambulance and fire crews attended the scene.

The occupants of the Toyota, a man and woman, both in the 70s and from Maryport, were taken by North West Ambulance Service to Cumberland Infirmary Carlisle, with serious injuries which are not believed to be life-changing.

The road will remain closed while police carry out their investigation.

Congestion is to be expected in and around the area. Drivers are asked to plan their route accordingly.

Anyone with information or dashcam footage relating to this incident, is asked to report it online via www.cumbria.police.uk/reportit quoting incident number 102 of the 12th of April or call 101.

Alternatively, contact independent charity Crimestoppers, completely anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
