A driver assaulted a police officer and failed to provide a breath specimen after crashing a car into a hedge.
Michael Vailiolis, 35, first came to the attention of police on November 13 when his ex-partner reported he had been at her address, that he was drunk and had been abusive towards her before leaving.
Police then learned Vailiolis might have been driving in the Aspatria area, Carlisle magistrates heard.
“And a report that a vehicle, a Volkswagen Passat, had crashed into a hedge, and the driver had driven off,” said prosecutor Peter Bardsley.
A police officer caught up with Vailiolis, who was abusive towards the officer and swore at him. “The officer took hold of the defendant’s right arm. At that point the defendant then pushed the officer away,” said Mr Bardsley.
That push was captured on police body-cam footage, and when he was brought to court he admitted assaulting an emergency worker.
Vailiolis initially denied a charge of failing to provide a breath specimen for analysis. “According to the officer, he tried but not very well,” said Mr Bardsley.
But in court today, the defendant changed his plea to guilty.
Lucy Renshaw, defending, said there were complex issues in Vailiolis’s background, and she hoped to obtain information from his GP and consultant before he was punished for the crimes.
He had latterly worked his way up to become an HGV driver, but understood he now faced a ban and would lose his employment.
Magistrates adjourned the case for preparation of a pre-sentence report. Vailiolis, of Queen Street, Aspatria, was bailed and is due to be sentenced on May 5.
In the meantime he was allowed to continue driving, but heard that a disqualification will follow in due course.
