£5 million plans to redesign an A595 junction will go on show.
Cumbria County Council is making improvements to the Greyhound Inn/Torpenhow junction on the A road, part of a wider scheme to revamp the road at Bothel.
Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership has prioritised the construction of the first phase of the Torpenhow junction, providing £5 million from its Getting Building Fund.
The county council has appointed Story Contracting to design and build the Torpenhow junction. As part of this project, its right-hand turning lanes into School Lane and Torpenhow Road will be redesigned.
The road leading to Torpenhow will be realigned with a new section of road to create a staggered junction.
The existing road to Torpenhow will be retained to create a safe route for active travel and for land access if needed.
Vehicle barriers will be placed at either end of the road closure – not the junction – and the county council propose that vehicles will only be allowed to enter the area for access purposes.
It means unwanted traffic will be removed from Torpenhow.
For more information about this project, residents are invited to a drop-in event on Wednesday April 27 from 4pm to 7pm at the Greyhound Inn, Bothel.
Angela Jones, executive director, economy and infrastructure, said: “The A595 is important for connectivity between Carlisle and West Cumbria, and I am pleased progress is being made with construction work starting soon on improvements to Torpenhow junction at Bothel.
“The junction improvement is the first phase of a much broader plan for the A595 with the second phase of work dependent on a funding approval from Government. More information on the scheme will be shared at the drop-in event and we hope to see as many locals as possible.”
Steve Cole, chair of Cumbria LEP’s investment panel, said: “The LEP recognised the importance of the A595 Bothel and that’s why we agreed that almost half of our Getting Building Fund would be used to support the first phase of this road scheme.”
