A provisional trial date has been set in the case of a man accused of wounding his elderly mother in Appleby with intent to cause her grievous bodily harm.

Sean Diepenbrock, 58, appeared at Carlisle Crown Court remotely over a video link earlier today.

He faces two charges. One alleges that he unlawfully and maliciously wounded the woman — aged in her 80s — “with intent to do her grievous bodily harm”.

A second charge alleges that he damaged a window belonging to a male.

Both charges arise out of incidents which are said to have occurred on January 10 this year. Diepenbrock, of Doomgate, Appleby, has yet to enter a plea to the two charges he faces.

That is because his legal team have request detailed background information from a medical expert. During today’s hearing, his barrister Judith McCullough requested more time to seek additional details.

Judge Nicholas Barker agreed to adjourn the case. But in the meantime, a provisional trial date was listed for August 22. It is estimated that would last around three days.

Diepenbrock was remanded in custody by the judge, who told him that an additional hearing is due to take place on May 6, when case progress is reviewed.

Diepenbrock is due to enter pleas to the two charges on that date.
