The battle for the Premiership title in the Cumberland County League intensified with the mid-week games.

It became even more intriguing after the results from the two scheduled mid-week fixtures.

Pirelli, lying in third position, travelled to meet Wigton Harriers at Barton Laws with second placed Workington Athletic having home advantage over Workington Reds Development.

Pirelli cemented their position with a 6-0 win with goals from Jordan Hodgson, Craig McCue, Ben Davidson and a hat trick from Jordy Atkinson.

Workington Athletic suffered a setback when they were on the wrong end of a 6-3 score line against the Reds.

Despite goals from Connor Hammell and Darren Lumsden (2) the Reds took all the points with Tom Houghton, Hayden Rae and Cieran Booty (4) contributing to their total.

All three teams go into the mix on Saturday with Workington Athletic and Aspatria playing their final league fixtures while Pirelli having played one game less.

But it’s a key game between two of the contenders as Workington Athletic take on Pirelli at home while Aspatria travel to meet Gosforth.

Aspatria are current leaders on 37 points with Workington Athletic on 36 and Pirelli having amassed 35.  However, Pirelli will still have a game in hand following the week-end fixtures which may prove to be vital.
