Cleator Moor’s Gary McKee has smashed his previous record of 110 consecutive marathons.
Cumbria’s own Marathon Man has pledged to run a marathon every day this year to raise funds for Hospice at Home West Cumbria and Macmillan Cancer Support.
He ran his 111th marathon this morning.
The dad-of-three began his Three Six Five Challenge on January 1 and has so far raised more than £70,000 for the charities.
Gary, 52, a group leader at Sellafield, said: “The reason I’m doing this is because I’m lucky enough to be able to take on a physical challenge of this scale, and every day I think about all the people going through cancer treatment who face their own physical and emotional challenges.
“If I can support people going through cancer and other life-limiting illnesses, while inspiring people to get out there and fundraise themselves, then every marathon I do every day is worth the effort.
“Every day from marathon 111 onwards to marathon 365 will be a new record for me. It is tough, but nothing is as tough as going through cancer treatment.”
His dad was successfully treated for cancer before his non-cancer related death.
Ennerdale Brewery has also launched a new version of its Marathon Man IPA – Marathon Man 365 – and all proceeds will go to Gary’s chosen charities.
