A Carlisle man who repeatedly stamped on his ex-partner’s chest as she shielded her phone during an attack in her own home has been sent to prison.
Luke James Brown, 29, went to his former girlfriend’s address at around 10pm on February 26.
Initially the chat was friendly but Brown then became angry. As he went upstairs, the woman closed a dividing door. But he came back down and thrust it open with such force that it came off two hinges and the frame cracked.
Brown twice left the address. On the second occasion was asked by his ex to leave her alone but instead responded by pushing her door open, shoving her backwards in the process, and causing her to fall into a table and chairs.
Carlisle Magistrates’ Court heard the woman then warned she would call police, prompting Brown to reply: “Fine, do it then.”
Brown got on top of the woman, grabbing her phone. As she tried to take it back, he pushed her, causing her to fall over. She then tried to hide the phone underneath her.
“At this point he stamped on her chest several times,” said prosecutor Pam Ward.
The woman was left with cuts and bruises across her body, and hundreds of pounds’ damage was caused to the door.
Brown, of Welsh Road, Carlisle, admitted charges of assault by beating and criminal damage when he appeared before magistrates today.
He put the offending down to alcohol he consumed that day. He had not consumed any for three months before that day — nor had any since — and was described as being “extremely contrite and extremely apologetic”.
Magistrates heard he had previous domestic violence offences on his record which involved his sister.
And, after retiring briefly, they imposed an immediate 16-week prison sentence.
“This was a quite nasty attack,” lead magistrate Keith Southward told Brown. “It was a prolonged attack. We have no option but to send you to custody.”
