Consolation after Workington Reds’ failure to land promotion

The Workington Reds Development squad with the County League’s Benevolent Cup after they had beaten Aspatria 1-0 in extra time

Workington Reds’ season ended in crushing disappointment with the failure to land promotion from NPL West.

But there was, at least, some consolation for the club’s development squad who ended their campaign with a trophy at Borough Park.

They beat Aspatria in the final of the Cumberland County League’s Benevolent Cup in a closely-contested game which went to extra-time.

Matty Foster was the Reds hero when he headed the only goal of the game in the first period of extra time when he got on the end of a cross from Leon Dmytrowski.

It had been a very even first half of the game but Reds had started to dominate after the interval, and they were also the more likely side in the first half of extra time, deserving their goal by Foster.

But Aspatria finished really strongly and Andrew Trestianu was close to levelling and sending the tie to penalties when he hit the bar.

Aspatria, too, like Reds seniors, have endured a frustrating end to the season. The County League title was snatched from their grasp by Pirelli on the final day and now they have failed in a consolation bid in the Benevolent Cup final.
