A flower festival is being held this weekend as part of a West Cumbrian church’s 150th anniversary celebrations.
Trudy Harrison, Copeland MP, formally opened the festival at St Mary’s Church, Cleator, yesterday and encouraged people to visit to enjoy the striking displays on offer.
Mrs Harrison said: “I had a fabulous time enjoying the beautiful arrangements at St Mary’s Flower Festival.
“The church is filled with striking and creative displays made and donated by local flower arrangers and supporters, with each arrangement carefully designed to represent a different sacrament.
“In addition, the festival has various commemorative arrangements, including one in tribute to the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and another in blue and yellow to show solidarity with the people of Ukraine.
“I’d like to thank Julia McClelland – the event organiser and my tour guide – and to Fr Paul Johnstone, the church council and parishioners for the invitation to open the festival and for such a warm welcome.”
The festival is being held at part several events to mark the church’s 150th anniversary celebrations, which included an art exhibition in January and continues with a parish photographic exhibition in June.
The Flower Festival is open today, Saturday, from 10.30am to 4.30pm and tomorrow from 11.30am to 3.30pm.
