Events to commemorate the Falklands War were held in Carlisle.
It is 40 years since the end of the conflict and the events, which included a parade and a church service, was organised by a group of people including Carlisle resident Rachel Simons who grew up in Stanley during the Falklands conflict, Carlisle Falklands veteran Howard Foster, and Canon Jim Hyslop of St. Cuthbert’s Church whose son Richard was appointed the Falkland Islands Government Representative to the UK in 2019.
They have been supported by Carlisle MP John Stevenson.
Around 90 Falkland veterans marched from Carlisle Cathedral to the war memorial by the Old Town Hall in the city centre, accompanied by Carlisle Army Cadet Force.
There was a wreath laying ceremony and short service of remembrance conducted by Canon Hyslop. The parade was led by Pipe Major Steven Duffy, veteran of the Scots Guards who saw active service in the Falklands conflict.
Mr Foster, a Forward Observation Officer with the 3rd Battalion the Parachute Regiment during the conflict, said “It is important that 40 years on we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice.”
Mr Stevenson said: “It is important that we remember the bravery of the 33,000 British troops who travelled to the Falklands to re-establish peace and freedom and the ultimate sacrifice of those that fell.”
