Distington put down another significant marker in their bid to regain the Holmen Iggesund Cumberland League title.
They beat champions Ellenborough 28-6 – two weeks after a big win over the Maryport side in the Cumbria Cup.
The basis for this important Premier Division win was a first-half performance which provided them with a 22-0 interval lead.
The second-half was shared 6-6 but for Ellenborough the damage had ben done in those first 40 minutes.
Distington had made a blistering side and within eight minutes had opened-up a 12-0 lead with two converted tries.
After just three minutes Nicky Cook got in for the opening try, converted by Scott George and soon after Phil Lister crossed the Ellenborough line.
When Lister grabbed his second try after 24 minutes and George nailed his third conversion Distington were in control and it got even better a minute before the break when Jack Penrice added an unconverted try.
Ellenborough tightened up in defence in the second half and Distington could only add one more try – Penrice’s second – in the last minute.
But the visitors only managed one converted try on 62 minutes when Keenan Winter crossed and converted his own try.
The only other CARL game over the weekend was at Wath Brow where the home A team had to put in a late surge to beat Maryport 24-18.
In their best display of the season Maryport had gone 6-0 up and although trailing 12-6 at the break had nosed ahead 18-12 seven minutes into the second-half.
Then two converted tries between the 69th and 74th minutes tipped the game Wath Brow’s way.
Luke McKnight had put Maryport ahead with a try on 27 minutes with Josh Patterson converting. The Hornets responded before the break with tries by Paul Niua and Kevin Christian, both improved by Jenson Olstrum.
Atlee Skillen gave Maryport the lead again with two tries inside four minutes soon after the break with Patterson converting.
The lead lasted until the final quarter of the game when Wath Brow hit back to win it. Kieran Eldon and Jimmy McCartney got over for tries, both converted by Olstrum.
The three Division One games, as well as the Premier Division clash between Glasson and Cockermouth were all postponed.
