Woman admits public order charge after altercation in Keswick

A woman is due to be sentenced next month for her role in an alteration in Keswick.

Ellie Ryan, 23, appeared at Carlisle Crown Court today. During a short hearing, Ryan pleaded not guilty to a charge alleging affray and the use or threatening of unlawful violence towards a man. She instead pleaded guilty to an alternative, less serious public order charge.

The court heard Ryan’s admission was on the basis of her attending at an unspecified location, shouting and an altercation — but not a physical assault.

It follows an incident which dates back to December 12 2020.

The case was adjourned and Ryan, previously of Windebrowe Avenue, Keswick, and now of North View, Aspatria, will be interviewed by a probation service officer before she receives her punishment on June 27. She will be sentenced for both the public order crime and, the court heard, a separate common assault.

Her barrister, Kim Whittlestone, told the court: “Things have changed significantly for this young woman since the commission of these two offences. She has addressed issues with her mental health, alcohol consumption and is now in employment.

“There are a number of avenues which, with the assistance of the probation service, will enlighten the court and will assist with the sentence.”

Ryan was granted unconditional bail by the judge, Recorder Julian Shaw, until the sentencing hearing.
