Home games at Workington Town’s ground are set to benefit from a new pop-up bar, if plans are approved by the council.
The rugby club has submitted an application for permission to install a temporary pop-up can bar at the back of the popular side of the terraces at Derwent Park
Volunteer ground staff say the existing can bar has seen long queues during home games.
They said: “Due to the siting of this can bar, the queue was intermingling with home and away fans. This made the area have more fans than usual causing a possible safety issue, also making it harder for the stewards to do their roles.”
A pop-up bar has been proposed for next to the can bar to deal with demand and slash waiting times.
“The driving factor to reduce this congestion and relive pressure on a single bar in turn mitigating any safety issues, also reducing any queuing, mostly situated within the standing away fans.”
The proposed pop-up bar to accommodate the number of fans would be a temporary wood frame construction with no permanent fittings.
Town’s home ground has had to accommodate large crowds for highly anticipated clashes like the Cumbrian derby with Whitehaven RL after earning promotion to the Championship this year.
The planning application is in consultation. The next step is for the plans to be scrutinised by Allerdale council’s development panel which will then make a decision to either approve, refuse or defer the application so that changes can be made.
It is estimated that the latest date for a decision on the plans could be July 8.
