Plans have been revealed to move Cockermouth’s Post Office.
The Post Office is currently in the Co-op, but the current post master has resigned. The firm is proposing to open a new branch on Station Street in the shop formerly occupied by Firns Home Hardware Store.
Firns closed last month after 80 years in the town, citing tough trading conditions.
It was bought by Julie Laidlow eight years ago. She put the business up for sale two years ago, but could not find a buyer.
Now, the Post Office is proposing moving into the Station Street shop and said it would undergo a full refurbishment to include a cards and stationery store.
It said: “The current Postmaster has resigned, and the premises would no longer be available for Post Office use. We have therefore had to identify an alternative location to continue to offer Post Office services to the local community.
“A new agent has been appointed to operate the Post Office from within a new premises, where it would continue to operate as one of our main-style branches.
“Our priority is to safeguard our services in the locality in the longer term and the relocation of Cockermouth Post Office will enable us to maintain a Post Office service to our customers in the local community.”
