Cumbria will stage the only National Conference game today – and it’s a local derby!
The game usually shuts down for Challenge Cup final day but Egremont Rangers have arranged to host Wath Brow Hornets at Gillfoot.
They have already played at Wath Brow over Easter when Egremont had Pat Wells sent off midway through the first-half and were generally felt unlucky to have lost 26-14.
It took a try two minutes from the end to really kill off Egremont’s brave challenge.
Now, over a month on and Egremont are battling to fight their way clear of the drop zone, currently next-to-bottom with only York Acorn a point below them.
They desperately need a win to start the climb to safety but clearly Wath Brow will be in no mood to do them any favours.
The Hornets were relieved to squeeze out a home win over Leigh Miners Rangers last week, grabbing a two-point success in a high-scoring game.
That win had followed three successive defeats and after a bright start to the Premier Division season, when they shared the lead, they have slipped to fifth six points behind leaders West Hull.
The kick-off will be at 1pm and the Egremont club will be hoping to make the expected big crowd make a day of it with the Challenge Cup final being shown on the big screen later.
No other games are taking place in the National Conference and there are no games in the Holmen Iggesund Cumberland League.
