A young West Cumbrian studying at Lancaster University has cleaned up at the football team’s end-of-season awards dinner.
Leo Sanczuk, 21, is in his final year studying sports science at the university but has just completed his first full season as a member of the football team.
At the annual presentation night Leo picked up a hat-trick of trophies – Players’ Player of the Year, Best Defender and Best Fresher.
As a fresher, he soon became a popular member of the squad as the team battled for honours in the British University and College Sport (BUCS) Level 5c League.
With the season drawing to a close the top spot for League honours rested on the result of the final game of the season between Lancaster and Huddersfield 2nds.
Leo’s team had thrashed Huddersfield 8-0 in the season’s previous encounter but all bets were off as the two teams went head-to-head in the League decider.
As the clock ticked down towards 90 minutes the sides were locked together at 0-0 until Leo unleashed a cracking shot to find the back of the Huddersfield net and earn his university the 2021/22 Championship.
At the team’s prize presentations the awards were handed out by the team’s captains Michael Jones and Josh Sharricks.
Leo is also a member of Whitehaven Amateurs’ first team squad in the West Lancashire League after joining the club as a junior.
He is also an outstanding cricketer, being wicket-keeper and vice captain of Whitehaven in the Cumbria League.
Leo, from Moresby Parks, was educated at St Begh’s and then St Benedict’s schools.
