What can you do to celebrate the Queen’s platinum jubilee?

Here is a list of some of the events happening across Cumbria to mark the Queen’s platinum jubilee.

Beacon lighting

More than 2,000 beacons throughout the UK and Commonwealth will be lit tonight at 9.45pm – and Hadrian’s Wall beacons will be lit at 10pm.

Events taking place across Cumbria over the bank holiday

Alston

  • June 3: Jubilee Thanksgiving Service in St Augustine’s Church at 6:30pm.

Arnside

  • June 4: The Big Platinum Jubilee Lunch on the Memorial Playing Fields from 1pm.

Askam-in-Furness

  • June 4: Platinum Jubilee Gala in Askam Rugby Club from noon.

Appleby

  • June 3: Cream tea event in public hall at 10am-1pm, workshop 1pm-4pm, bingo from 7pm.
  • June 4: Jubilee coffee morning in the main Public Hall from 9.30am-1pm. Town band playing in town centre from 10:15am.
    Church bells will be ringing from 2pm-3.10pm.

Barrow

  • June 2: Garden party in St James’ Church from 2pm-5pm.
  • June 4: There will be street entertainers, workshops and a live stage with various performers between noon and 8pm. A Right Royal Afternoon Tea at Risedale Gospel Hall from 2pm to 4pm.

Bassenthwaite

  • June 3: Quiz and raffle at the Sun Inn from 7.45pm.
  • June 4: Duck race on the beck at 1.30pm.
  • June 5: Platinum Jubilee Quiz Trail starting at 1 The Avenue and ending at 1 The Green from 12.30pm. Tea Party and games on the village green from 2pm.

Brampton

  • June 5: Live entertainment, barbecue, inflatables and more on King George V field from 1pm-5pm. Free afternoon tea and live entertainment for anyone over 70 in the community centre from 1pm-4pm.

Broughton-in-Furness

  • June 4: Platinum Jubilee Celebration including live music from 1pm.

Carlisle

  • June 5: A free community celebration will take place at Bitts Park from 10.30am until 2pm. For more information, click here.

Cartmel

  • June 2: Music in Cartmel Priory from 8.30pm.
  • June 3: Cream tea Celebration at Cartmel Fell WI from 2pm-4pm.
  • June 4: Fun and games on Goswick Hall’s fields from 2.30pm.
  • June 5: Commemorative Service in Cartmel Priory at 9.30am, followed by a ‘bring your own picnic’ in the Priory Grounds and Devonshire Square.

Cockermouth

  • June 2-June 5: An exhibition of royal artefacts and images will be on display daily at Kirkgate Centre from 10am to 4pm. On June 2, Eric Cass will give a talk about past monarchs at 2pm. On June 3, a free concert takes place at 7pm.

Coniston

  • June 4: Street party at Coniston Sports & Social Centre from noon. Commemorative tree planting in John Ruskin School from 5.30pm-6pm.
  • June 5: Jubilee afternoon tea and dancing in Coniston Institute at 2pm.

Dalton-in-Furness

  • June 3: Free event featuring the town band and a DJ on the grounds of Newton Arms Pub at 2pm-5pm.
  • June 4: A 1950s event will take place at St Mary’s Church from 1.15pm.

Distington

  • June 4: A tea party will take place in Distington’s Walled Garden between 10am to 2pm.

Egremont

  • June 4: Town band playing an outdoor concert at the King George IV inn to celebrate the Jubilee, starting at 2pm.

Gosforth

  • June 4: Fancy dress, crafts, competitions and more at Gosforth Public Hall from 10am-12.30pm.
  • June 5: Big Jubilee Lunch at Gosforth Playing Field from noon.

Grange-over-Sands

  • June 4: Great Big Garden Party at St Charles’ field from noon.
  • June 5: Picnic in the Park and Parade from 11am to 1pm.

Greystoke

  • June 2: Reading of the Queen’s Proclamation in Village Green from noon to 12.15pm.
  • June 4: Hat Parade, sports, bouncy castles and afternoon tea in Village Green from 1-5pm.
  • June 5: Hand Bells Performance outside the Boot and Shoe at 11am. Service of Praise at St Andrews Church followed with tea & cake at 2pm. Live music at the Boot and Shoe Inn from 4pm.

Hawkshead

  • June 5: Jubilee Street Party in the Square Hawkshead from 1pm.

Keswick

  • June 2: Special Jubilee Market in Market Square from 9am to 5pm.
  • June 5: Jubilee Pop & Proms at Fitz Park from 1pm to 9pm.

Kirkby Lonsdale

  • June 2-June 5: Dancing Through The Decades.
  • June 2 Jubilee Charter Market from 9am-4pm at Market Square.
  • June 3 and 4: Street party in Market Square, with live music and Curious Dance Commission parade from 11am-6pm.
  • June 3: Traditional games at Kirkby Lonsdale Playpark from 11am-5pm. ‘Choose Your Decade Disco’ at Kirkby Lonsdale Rugby Club from 7-11pm.
  • June 4: Teddy Bear’s Picnic at The Methodist Church and Gardens.
  • June 5: Closing Ceremony at St Mary’s Church from 10.30am. Kirkby Lonsdale Handbell Ringers at Market Square from 2:30pm. Special showing of Miss Baines (an interactive dance) for members of The Community Cupboard from 3pm at Lunesdale Hall. Musical Quiz Night at St Mary’s Church from 7-9pm.

Kirkby Stephen

  • June 2: A 1950s-2020s fancy dress parade is taking place from South Road to Market Square gathering at the caravan park for 9.30am. Dog show behind Local Links from 10.30am. The Church grounds encourage locals to bring a picnic at noon and take part in the barbecue. Free concert in Kirkby Stephen Parish Church at 6.30pm.
  • June 2-3: Exhibition of quilts and more in Masonic Hall at 10am–4pm.
  • June 2-5: Exhibition of royal memorabilia at Parish Church.
  • June 3 Jubilee Show in Kirkby Stephen Sports and Social Club from 2-4pm.
  • June 4: Eden Animal Rescue Fundraising Stall at The Cloisters from 9am-1.30pm.
    June 5: Concert at Kirkby Stephen Parish Church starting at 10.30am.

Brough

  • June 4: Children’s Sports Festival on the Football pitch at 1-3pm. Fancy Dress Parade at 4pm (meet at the Memorial Hall at 3.45pm). Duck Race at 4:30pm. Street party on Bridge Street from 5pm-10pm.
  • June 5: Bring & Share Jubilee Afternoon Tea in Brough Memorial Hall at 2.30pm.

Penrith

  • June 4: Jubilee Jamboree in Penrith Town Centre from 10am to 4pm. Live music, funfair, theatre, dancing, crafts and activities across the town centre.

Sedbergh

  • June 2: Picnic with the Queen at Cornerstone Community Church Lawn from 11.30am-2.30pm.
  • June 3: Platinum Jubilee Service of Thanksgiving at St Andrew’s Parish Church from 10.30am.
  • June 4: Raffle, games and refreshments at Firbank Church Hall from 6.45pm.

St Bees

  • June 3: A televised Service of Thanksgiving will be streamed live in St Bees Priory from 11.30am.
  • June 5: Street Tea Party on Crosshill from 3pm-5pm.

Ulverston

  • June 2: 2022 Festival, Choral Concert: Jubilation in Parish Church at 7.30pm.
  • June 4: Platinum Jubilee Celebrations from 10am to 4pm including the Town Band playing at Market Place.

Whitehaven

  • The Beacon Museum will be showcasing royal mementos as well as holding craft sessions that are included in the museum ticket price until June 6.
  • June 2: Free cultural festival at The Welfare Playground from 11.30am-3.30pm.
  • June 10: Free event at Whitehaven Archive Centre showcasing historical Tudor documents. It starts at 2pm and will finish with a royal themed quiz.

Wigton

  • June 2: Jubilee Proclamation at the Memorial Fountain from 2pm.
  • June 4: Community Party in the Park at Barton Laws, including music, games, food/drink and fireworks from 3pm-11pm.

Workington

  • June 4: A party will take place in Vulcan Park between 10am to 4pm. There will be a musical line up as well as a companion dog show and more. For more information click here
  • June 5: Indoor afternoon tea at Carnegie Theatre, noon to 5pm.
