Whitehaven produced a fine second-half performance to end their losing run with a hugely important win at Dewsbury Rams.
They had trailed 18-8 at the break but produced their best 40 minutes for weeks to come back and win 26-18.
Whitehaven had made a bright enough start and after nine minutes took the opportunity to go in front with a Nikau Williams penalty.
But the advantage lasted only two minutes for when the Rams responded Haven were caught offside and Matty Beharrell levelled from the subsequent penalty.
Whitehaven had to defend repeat sets on their line and they couldn’t keep the Rams out on 20 minutes when Michael Knowles put in a grubber which was followed up by Andy Gabriel to make the touchdown.
But Whitehaven came back strongly and were denied a certain score by a superb covering tackle from Blackmore.
When Dewsbury responded with a dangerous attack Andrew Bulman made a smart interception on his own 10 metre line and raced away for the try. Williams’ conversion put the visitors narrowly ahead.
But the game changed in the final ten minutes of the half when two converted tries for the Rams gave them an 18-8 interval lead.
After strong pressure from a scrum near the Haven line Ryder wriggled free to get over the try line and Beharrell converted.
Then right on half-time Dewsbury scored again. A great ball over the top from Beharrell was taken by Gabriel to go in for his second try of the game.
Whitehaven applied strong pressure on the re-start and they were encouraged when the Rams had Reiss Butterworth sent to the bin on 53 minutes for a professional foul.
It took some strong Dewsbury defence to keep-out the re-energised Haven and on 59 minutes they had Paul Sykes yellow-carded, also for a professional foul.
On the hour Haven got the try they needed when Ryan King gained possession from a loose ball and went over for the try which Williams converted.
After 63 minutes Dion Aiye thought he had levelled for Haven when he went in but instead the referee gave a penalty for obstruction.
But four minutes later Aiye did get over for a legitimate score which was converted by Williams.
With a two point advantage Whitehaven now had all the incentive they needed to go on and win the game. They made certain with a try three minutes from the end when Williams threw a dummy before going in. He added the conversion.
