Barrow bingo expansion plans can go ahead

Opera Bingo in Barrow

Barrow’s bingo hall has been given the go-ahead to expand.

Opera Bingo in Holker Street wants to add a function room to its premises and applied to Barrow council for permission.

Its bid was unanimously agreed by councillors on the planning committee.

Daryl Davidson, head of operations and finance at Opera Bingo, told Tuesday’s meeting: “It would form part of our bingo offering. We’ll use it in line with what we currently do. We have no plans to change what we do, the formula works.”

Ms Davidson said the room would accommodate around 30 people.

In a report produced ahead of the meeting, case officer Jennifer Dickinson said a representation over a potential reduction in light to properties in Shakespeare Street had been received.

Ms Dickinson said the distance between the proposed extension and neighbouring properties meant the impact of the proposal ‘should therefore be minimal’.

Concerns were also raised over the potential for the proposal to create noise nuisance.

In the pre-meeting report, a spokesman for public protection services at the borough council said he had no objections to the application but that the department was ‘watching the area carefully’.

Ms Dickinson had recommended the extension for approval. Licensing permission will need to be obtained.
