Students in Whitehaven can apply for up to £1,500 to support their arts and cultural studies.

Eligible 16 to 21-year-olds must live in the Mirehouse, Corkickle or Snebro areas of the town and be completing full or part- time training in a creative trade.

A total of £7,500 is available – with five students being awarded up to £1,500 each.

The bursary is being delivered by Copeland Borough Council’s Well Whitehaven project – an initiative designed to improve the life and wellbeing of those living in the area.

It is aimed at people working towards a career in the creative industries in roles such as journalism, creative writing, media, arts, graphic design and more.

Well Whitehaven is also hosting the Creative Pathways Festival, which takes place on July 1 from 10am to 6pm.

The festival will host three workshops at Whitehaven Rugby League Club – local businesses, educators and creative organisations will be there to discuss opportunities for young people.

Katie Rae, social inclusion apprentice for Well Whitehaven, said: “It’s very important that young people who study the arts don’t feel limited when it comes to finding work.

“Making sure that students with creative talent are supported will help create more diverse career opportunities in the area.

“The financial support on offer through our bursary scheme will allow young residents to focus on their studies and worry less about their finances, while the festival will help showcase local employment opportunities.”

Bursary applications will be assessed based on financial need and will help contribute towards educational and living expenses. To find out more or to apply contact the Well Whitehaven team at: wellwhitehaven@copeland.gov.uk
