Finds from a community Roman dig in Carlisle are going on the road to show people what has been uncovered.
Community volunteers spent a total of 1,100 days on the archaeology project at Carlisle Cricket Club, which was led by a team of experts and found the largest known building on Hadrian’s Wall and more than 700 artefacts.
Now, some of the objects are going on tour across the area, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
The exhibition will take in Longtown Community Centre, Fort Maia Visitor Centre in Bowness-on-Solway, Brampton Moot Hall, Burgh by Sands Village Hall, Carlisle Cricket Club, civic centre and the city’s The Lanes Shopping Centre.
The project is led by Carlisle City Council, Carlisle Cricket Club, Tullie House and Wardell Armstrong.
Claire Sleightholm, Uncovering Roman Carlisle’s exhibition curator, said: “Uncovering Roman Carlisle has unearthed a vast amount of Carlisle’s Roman history.
“We are working with our wonderful volunteers to bring the exhibition into the communities who helped uncover and discover this exceptional site.
“This is really exciting for the project and will allow the local community to see up close some of the amazing Roman finds and to provide more people the chance to see what Carlisle has to offer.”
The venues will be open to the public but opening times may vary. Find out more at www.tulliehouse.co.uk/urc
