A couple have brought their passion for Mexican food to the Lake District.
Tacos Del Sol, in Ambleside, offers authentic Mexican food, thanks to the cooking prowess of Marisol Kidd, who hails from Mexico City.
Marisol and her husband Chris previously ran a food truck in East Sussex, but the onset of the coronavirus pandemic saw them decide to relocate.
The pair, who met in California, had visited the Lake District several times and fallen in love with the area, so decided to move up north and they said it was a dream come true.
It was a natural move to open a takeaway, Chris said, to bring the authentic taste of Mexico to the area, and plans are in the pipeline to open a full restaurant too.
Marisol uses her family’s traditional recipes in Tacos Del Sol.
Her family owned and operated a restaurant in Mexico City and Marisol spent most of her youth there. She said: “I grew up in the kitchen with my family. My family has a history of making food and owning restaurants.”
Chris said: “We are very much into bringing Mexican cuisine to Ambleside and passionate about going back to its roots, not changing the recipe, making it traditional and authentic Mexican ingredients.
“It just happened naturally. Marisol has a passion and understanding of the herbs and spices.”
She met Chris, who comes from Cumbrian farming stock in Great Broughton, Penrith and Cockermouth, in a restaurant in California.
Chris, who was in the military for 10 years and took part in five Trooping the Colours, was teaching and directing fitness programmes in a health spa.
The couple, who have two children – Sebastian, 16, and Finn, 13 – lived in California and Oregon for 12 years before returning to the UK.
Chris said: “I wanted to come back to my roots and let my family experience where I grew up.”
Marisol added: “It’s important to know both parts of the family and culture.”
