West Cumbrian speedway star Dan Bewley ended in hospital after a frightening and spectacular crash in Poland.
The Grand Prix ace from Maryport ended over the fence after a collision in heat 14.
Bewley was catapulted over the second-bend air fence after being caught by Czestochowa rider Jonas Jeppesen at Wroclaw’s Olympic Stadium.
The collision straightened up Bewley and he went head first over the air bag fence and landed in the neutral zone.
The Cumbrian was taken to hospital with concerns over a leg injury, with his Polish club Wroclaw tweeting that scans revealed a trauma to the intercondylar elevation of the left tibia.
Posting on Twitter, he wrote: “Feeling pretty beat up all over but thankful it wasn’t worse. Have a bruised lung and a little damage on my left leg. But will update when I know more. Huge thanks to everyone who looked after me last night.”
Bewley was forced out of Saturday night’s Speedway European Championship opening round in Rybnik, with Polish star Dominik Kubera taking his place.
Later Bewley took to social media to thank those who supported him after the crash and admit he had a relatively lucky escape.
Bewley races in both Poland and Sweden but will be back in Britain in a fortnight to take his place in the British Grand Prix at Cardiff.
