Ryan Edmondson, Carlisle’ s new recruit from Leeds United, scored two first half goals to set up a third pre-season win for Paul Simpson’s side.
The third goal came in the 90th minute when a Workington trialist, trying to defend a United corner, headed into his own net.
It was another satisfying performance for Simpson’s men who gave his initial selection 60 minutes before making wholesale changes.
For opposite number Danny Grainger there were positives, too, in the way they played for much of the game and matched their League Two opponents.
The downside for Grainger was probably the same as two previous friendlies at Borough Park – the lack of opportunities they created.
The one real chance fell late in the game to centre-half Liam Lightfoot who arrived late to get on the end of a Ben Hughes cross but directed his header over the top.
Carlisle didn’t fashion a lor of chances themselves but Edmondson delivered when asked to twice in the first half.
On 11 minutes a Jamie Devitt cross saw Edmondson rise highest and his downward header was superbly kept out by Jim Atkinson. But he could only parry the effort and Edmondson was able to follow-up and thump home.
The second came on 21 minutes when Callum Guy’s ball over the top was pursued by Edmondson who held-off Lightfoot to finish with aplomb.
There was almost a sensational start to the second half when Callum Guy spotted Atkinson out of his goal and let one go from nearly 40 yards. The ball cannoned back off the post and Tobi Sho-Silva was first to react, taking control and firing in a great shot.
Atkinson, however, was across to make fine diving save – not knowing that the flag had gone up for offside.
Simpson changed his players after an hour and highlight of the last half an hour was a cultured performance from new signing Owen Moxon, who looks a good recruit.
Edmondson and young Max Kilsby had impressed during their time on the pitch while for Workington Grainger would be very happy with the contributions from new boys Ben Hughes and Bobby Carroll.
