The speedway roundabout has provided a new team place for Cumbrian and former Workington rider Adam Roynon.

Roynon, 33, has been snapped up by Scunthorpe after his recent release from Championship rivals Redcar.

He replaces Connor Coles for the Scorpions and is set to make his debut when they visit Poole on Wednesday July 20.

Co-promoter Rob Godfrey said: “Once Adam became available, we realised we needed to sign him. He wasn’t having a great time at Redcar, but he was riding for them up at No.2.

“Adam will slot into our team at No.6 on a 3.00 average. I’m convinced he can do the job that we need him to, which is to pick up a few points per meeting.

“We thank Connor Coles for his efforts with the club. He was frequently getting amongst the other riders and wasn’t far off getting some decent points returns.

“We notice Connor scored a lot of points for the Leicester National League team in their latest meeting, and I hope it’s not too long until his next chance at Championship level.”

At Scunthorpe Roynon will join a former Workington team-mate James Wright who has moved to the Scorpions after the decision by Newcastle Diamonds to close the doors.

Roynon has had a long list of clubs throughout his career – including three spells with the Comets – which has been dogged by serious injuries.

Indeed back in March 2009, on the eve of the season, Roynon crashed while practicing with the Great Britain squad at King’s Lynn a suffered a blood clot on his brain and a broken neck )(C2 vertebrae).

His survival chances were initially assessed as 50/50 but his recovery amazed doctors who allowed him to leave hospital eleven days later wearing a halo brace.

His father Chris Roynon was a former rider and later promoter with the Barrow team, known as the Blackhawks, and which he revived briefly in 1985.
