Stan McAlindon’s County Championship debut got even better on the second day after his exploits on the first.
The 18-year-old Carlisle quick bowler took two wickets to end the Derbyshire innings on Monday and then helped steer Durham to a first innings lead with the bat.
Arriving at the crease with Durham on 209-8 he figured in two partnerships which took his side to 296, a lead of 13 on the first innings.
McAlindon, who started his cricketing career as a five-year-old at the Great Corby club and flourished after switching to Carlisle, was unbeaten on 26.
He helped put on 36 with good pal Tom Mackintosh (51) who was also making his debut and a further 51 for the last wicket with bowling hero Chris Rushworth (33).
At the close Derbyshire had lost two wickets, both to Rushworth and had only made 19 – a lead of six.
The interesting thing will be when McAlindon is brought into the attack. A wicket with his first ball will earn him a unique hat-trick – and the longest on record possibly.
He took his first off the final ball of an over and the second came off the first ball of the next which ended the Derbyshire innings. A hat-trick across two days, and from three different overs will surely set a record.
