A Cumbrian RSPB reserve is hosting an exhibition of pictures inspired by birdsong.
A Dawn Chorus by Mike Collier has opened at RSPB Geltsdale, near Brampton, and runs until August 19.
The exhibition was initially inspired by listening to birdsong in a Northumberland woodland garden – 16 birds heard early one morning in mid-May. Their songs, represented as digitally manipulated sonograms and musical transcriptions, form the basis of the show of prints.
Mike is a lecturer, writer, curator and artist, and currently professor of visual art at the University of Sunderland.
Mike said: “The work loosely describes how individual bird species interact through song in the dawn chorus—exploring ways of visually and musically reinvoking these patterns of cultural interaction in a more-than-human world.
“The pictures examine ways of showing how we might better understand our complex relationship to a more-than-human world, enabling us to value the whole world as a living ecology of cultural differences.”
The artwork was created in collaboration with Geoff Sample, Alex Charrington, Rachael Clewlow, Bennett Hogg and Tom Jordon.
