Train services are likely to face delays and cancellations next week as extreme heat warnings hit the country.
TransPennine Express is urging customers to plan carefully and be prepared as heat speed restrictions will be implemented by Network Rail on Monday and Tuesday, leading to longer journeys, delays and cancellations.
Restrictions are designed to slow trains down and reduce the risk of track and equipment failing in the heat.
The announcement has come after the UK Government declared the upcoming extreme weather a national emergency, following the Met Office issuing their highest warning, meaning their is a risk to life.
The rail operator will be running an amended train plan and customers are advised to only travel on these days if absolutely necessary, anyone making an essential journey is urged to bring water and sunscreen with them.
Kathryn O’Brien, Customer Service and Operations Director for TransPennine Express said: “With weather warnings in place between Sunday and Monday and a number of speed restrictions planned to be imposed on Monday and Tuesday, we will be running an amended train plan and are urging people to only travel if absolutely necessary on these dates
“This is likely to be some of the hottest weather we’ve ever seen. Journeys will take longer than usual and further disruption is likely. Anyone using our services on Monday and Tuesday should check before they travel and allow plenty of time.”
Those travelling next week who experience a delay may be entitled to compensation.
