Barrow produced a remarkable comeback to win 36-32 at Sheffield and strengthen their play-off claims in the Betfred Championship.

The Raiders recent winning run seemed heading for closure when they trailed the Eagles 22-12 at half-time and by the hour mark that had increased to 32-12.

But the last quarter belonged to the visitors as they scored four converted tries to steal the game, with the winning touchdown coming in the last minute. The conversion went over as the hooter sounded.

The opening score had gone to the Eagles when they survived early Barrow pressure before building an attack themselves and Matty Chrimes touched down for Josh Guzdek to convert.

Barrow drew level on 17 minutes when Jarrod Sammut made an interception to race 70 metres before giving Tee Ritson the final run-in. Ryan Shaw landed the first of six conversions.

On 24 minutes Sheffield regained the lead when Barrow ran out of numbers in defence and Ben Jones-Bishop scored an unconverted try.

But oce again Barrow hit back quickly and this time took the lead. Sammut was the architect this time and Jarrad Stack the benefactor.

In a confident finish to the half Sheffield regained the lead with a try from Cory Aston, converted by Guzdek – and increased the advantage just before the hooter with a try from  Laulu-Togaga’e which Guzdek improved.

That was a set-back after a decent half by Barrow and it got worse before it got better.

On 49 minutes Joel Farrell cross for an unconverted try and then on 59 minutes Jones Bishop grabbed his second try of the game, converted by Guzdek.

With a 20-point deficit and 20 minutes left Whitehaven really did have to show character and determination to fight their way back to the win.

Ryan Johnston started the recovery on 62 minutes when he went in from close range. Three minutes later Ellis Gillam plunged over after good work by Miloudi.

It was down to an eight point game and on 69 minutes Barrow were really knocking on the door. A cut out pass from Sammut found Shane Toal out wide and he did the rest.

It stayed at 32-30 until a minute from the end when Miloudi, despite being smothered by three defenders still managed to throw out a pass and Ritson made no mistake to race away for his second try and the match-winning touchdown.

The accurate boot of Shaw gave him six from six and was the final act of a thrilling game.
