Three charities will benefit from a special seniors rugby league tournament being held at Arlecdon at the end of the month.
The Arlecdon Rams, one of Cumbria’s leading Masters teams, has organised the event for over-35s sides but it will be played under Masters rules.
Teams from Arlecdon, Great Clifton and Maryport will take part in the tournament and there will be a fourth team competing when arrangements have been completed.
It will be held on Saturday, August 27.
One of the organising committee John Gaston said: “We will be raising funds for the Henderson Suite/Ward B at West Cumberland Hospital; the Great North Air Ambulance and MIND.
“Every penny we raise will be split between the three charities as all the expenses will be absorbed by player subscription and a lot of voluntary effort.
“We are backing Barry Maxwell, the former Great Clifton Lions player and coach who has recovered from cancer for a second time and remembering Peter Dawson, who sadly passed away a few years ago. He was also a former Great Clifton player.”
The day is being staged at the Adams Ground in the village and fundraising events will be held from noon before the rugby gets underway.
John added: “We have written to local businesses seeking sponsorship and we are all hoping it’s going to be a day to remember.
“There will be music, children’s activities, raffles and an auction of sporting memorabilia so plenty to keep everyone involved before the rugby.
“There is also going to be an online virtual duck race which is going to be advertised through social media.
“We expect a few rugby league enthusiasts under-35s will be there and if there’s enough we would organise a game for them.”
