First race for West Cumbria Amalgamation

Mark Hodgson of Flimby who had the first three on the West Cumbria Amalgamation sheet

The West Cumbria Amalgamation had their first race from Appleton on Saturday when both organisations went up together.

Although there was a fair bit of rain about the North West, the birds got away well, although they were slower home than the mainly south west wind would have suggested.

Returns were mixed at clocks but there were a lot of late arrivals and in the end it was a case of some lofts doing better than others.

Flimby fancier Mark Hodgson put up a great performance to take first, second and third in the Amalgamation.

He’s the only fancier racing in the Flimby West Coast club and has to use Flimby HS basket space to race his birds, with his competition limited to Federation and Amalgamation races.

All three of his birds which took the leading positions are bred through stock obtained from McGimpsey brothers of Northern Ireland.

He was put in touch with the Irish maestros by Barry Irving from the Sandwith club 10 years ago. This week’s winner is line-bred to McGimpsey’s Whitehead junior, being a double granddaughter.

The second bird clocked is bred through a cock purchased off McGimpsey and a hen that he and Barry Irving bought direct off Full Set and Pink Eyes who set the Midlands on fire when racing and breeding.

The third bird is again through McGimpsey stock going back on one side to Whitehead Junior and a cock named The Magician.

The chequer white flight hen which topped the West Cumberland Federation for Andy Holliday and Ken Dixon.

From Mark’s point of view the race turned out better for him than it looked earlier as he ended up getting back all 32 entries.

The West Cumberland Federation winner was a chequer white flight hen flying to the Lowca loft of Andy Holliday and Ken Dixon which was bred in the stock loft.

The partnership were unsure of their chances as she wasted a lot of time whilst trapping.

Her sire was introduced to the stock loft this year after being badly hawked from training in 2021. He was a winner on the road and is bred from the loft’s number one stock pair who are now responsible for 15 individual first prize-winners and five first Fed toppers.

The dam is a new introduction to the loft this year. She was purchased from Peter Fox (Syndicate Lofts) at his Blackpool auction. The sire is Primo and the dam is Cinnamon Girl.
